Since 2008, the Rotary Club of Walnut Creek has been a major sponsor of Challenge Day at Northgate High School.
In 2008, the Northgate’s Parent Faculty Club (“PFC”) decided that the atmosphere of bullying and intimidation at Northgate needed to change. They looked into different alternatives and decided that Challenge Day was the organization needed at Northgate. At about this same time, Rotarian Jerry Benoit, who had previously done some volunteer work for Challenge Day, was searching for an opportunity to bring Challenge Day to a school in Walnut Creek with the help of Rotary. They found each other and put together a very successful program, which has continued for almost every year since.
Challenge Day breaks down communication barriers between student groups, thus building empathy and community on campus. Students and adults leave Challenge Day inspired and empowered to become leaders in their schools and communities and to “Be the Change” they wish to see in the world.
The Rotary Club’s role in this has been two-fold: 1) Through our Community Foundation, we have been a major financial donor each year; and 2) We have supplied volunteers to help with registration, security, lunch, and to act as adult facilitators.
