Since 1999, the Rotary Club of Walnut Creek has provided the “Diablo Assistance League” with service projects and financial support to help achieving their mission. The League’s mission statement is “a nonprofit member volunteer organization dedicated to improving lives in our community through hands-on programs.”
President Russ Anderson (1998-1999) selected as his major project the conversion of an old carport attached to the Assistance League’s Cottage into a room for the storage of puppets and supplies used in support of their projects. The carport had a new roof but was out of square and lower than eight feet. A new foundation slab was also required. These problems were overcome and a very nice looking addition resulted. There were about 18 members who completed the project.
The Assistance League approached the club in 2003 asking if we could add a small addiction to their cottage. The club reviewed the proposal and told them that what they had outlined was something that the club could do. The Assistance League commissioned an Architect to draw up the plans. The plans turned out to be for a project far greater than club Volunteers could handle but feeling an obligation members were able to enlist the help of a non-member who solicited help from contractors in his professional network. The Contractors agreed to help with the project. They constructed the addition and remodeled much of the existing cottage and also re-landscaped the property. Members of our club also worked on the project mainly in the existing cottage.
The club continues to provide annual financial assistance which supports Assistance League activities.
